Colombia Approves Energy Storage to Power Renewables

Colombia just took a major step toward a cleaner energy future by officially welcoming battery storage into its power grid.

The government issued Decree 0393, which establishes clear rules for integrating energy storage systems into both Colombia's main electrical grid and remote areas that aren't connected to it. For the first time, batteries can officially participate in electricity markets and get paid for the services they provide.

These storage systems can do far more than just hold electricity. They help balance the grid when demand spikes, keep voltage steady, provide backup power during outages, and even help restart the system after blackouts. Most importantly, they store solar and wind energy generated during sunny or windy periods so it can be used when the sun sets or the breeze dies down.

The timing couldn't be better. As Colombia builds more solar and wind farms, the country needs a way to manage the natural fluctuations that come with renewable energy. Batteries solve that puzzle by capturing excess clean power and releasing it exactly when it's needed.

Energy Minister Edwin Palma says the decree represents a fundamental shift in how Colombia operates its power system. The new framework aims to attract investment while making better use of infrastructure that's already in place.

In remote areas currently powered by expensive, polluting diesel generators, battery storage can team up with local solar panels to provide cleaner, more reliable electricity. The Energy and Gas Regulatory Commission will handle the details, defining exactly how storage systems get compensated and setting operational standards. The Ministry of Mines and Energy will coordinate with technical agencies to determine which grid services batteries can provide.
