Colorado Parking Lot Reveals First Dinosaur Find in 100 Years

Sometimes the best discoveries happen when you're just trying to fix a parking lot.

Workers at Dinosaur National Monument on the Colorado-Utah border made an incredible find last September while doing routine upgrades. As they tore up old asphalt near the famous Quarry Exhibit Hall, they hit a layer of sandstone packed with dinosaur bones. Nobody had uncovered fossils at this exact spot in over a century.

The construction crews immediately stopped work on September 16, 2025, so paleontologists could carefully examine what they'd found. What makes this discovery special isn't just the fossils themselves. It's where they turned up.

The site sits right next to the "Wall of Bones," a legendary stretch of rock containing about 1,500 dinosaur fossils still embedded exactly where they settled millions of years ago. Scientists have studied this area intensively for generations. Yet it still had secrets buried just beneath the surface.

According to the National Park Service, the bones likely belonged to a Diplodocus, a long-necked giant from the Late Jurassic period. Teams of park staff, volunteers, and the Utah Conservation Corps carefully removed roughly 3,000 pounds of rock and fossil material during the excavation.

The fossils are now being cleaned and studied at the Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum in Vernal, Utah. Some pieces are already on display at the Quarry Exhibit Hall, giving visitors a behind-the-scenes look at real paleontology in action.
