Connecticut Women's Group Honors Late Member With Scholarship

When Kelly Allard Leach went back to school as an adult to change her career path, she showed her Connecticut community what courage looks like. Now, the Killingworth Women's Organization is honoring her memory by helping other women do the same.

The KWO launched the New Beginnings scholarship in January 2026 to support adult learners in Haddam, Higganum, and Killingworth. Leach, who passed away in February 2025, was a longtime KWO member known for her kindness and passion for community service.

The scholarship awards between $100 and $500 at least twice per year to women pursuing education later in life. Recipients can use funds for GED programs, vocational training, college degrees, or professional certifications in new fields.

What makes this scholarship different is its practical approach to real barriers. Money can cover tuition and books, but also transportation and childcare, the everyday obstacles that often stop adult learners before they start.

The fund is open to women or those who identify as women who live or work in the three Connecticut towns. Awards are paid directly to students, removing financial middlemen and getting help where it's needed faster.

The first application deadline is February 28, 2026, with awards announced April 1. Applications submitted after March 1 will be considered in the next funding round later this year.
