COVID Vaccine During Pregnancy Safe for Child Development

Pregnant mothers can breathe easier thanks to new research that confirms what doctors have long believed: the COVID-19 vaccine poses no risk to their children's brain development.

Scientists from the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network studied 434 children between 18 and 30 months old, carefully tracking their development in areas like communication, motor skills, and social interaction. Half were born to mothers who received at least one mRNA vaccine dose during or just before pregnancy. The other half had mothers who didn't receive the vaccine during that time.

The results were clear. Children in both groups showed identical development patterns across the board.

Researchers used multiple proven assessment tools to measure everything from problem-solving abilities to signs of autism. They matched mothers carefully by delivery location, timing, insurance status, and race to ensure fair comparisons. They excluded premature births and pregnancies with complications to focus specifically on vaccine effects.

"Neurodevelopment outcomes in children born to mothers who received the COVID-19 vaccine during or shortly before pregnancy did not differ from those born to mothers who did not receive the vaccine," said Dr. George Saade, Professor and Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Old Dominion University.

The study adds to growing evidence that COVID vaccines are safe during pregnancy. Both mRNA and protein subunit vaccines are recommended at any stage of pregnancy to protect mothers and babies from serious illness.
