Delhi Invests $12M to Upgrade Slums, Not Remove Them

Thousands of families living in Delhi's slum clusters just got unexpected news: the government wants to improve their homes, not demolish them.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced Sunday that her administration is investing approximately $12 million to transform slum neighborhoods across the city. The plan prioritizes dignity over displacement, focusing on permanent housing, clean toilets, bathing facilities, roads, and parks where children can play safely.

Speaking at an event in the R.K. Puram neighborhood, Gupta acknowledged that previous governments ignored basic needs in these communities for years. Now, her team is taking a different approach by treating slum residents as valued citizens who deserve the same modern amenities as wealthier neighborhoods.

The transformation includes road construction and repairs, renovated community platforms, upgraded community centers, and beautified parks. Residents will see better street connectivity, safer public spaces, and cleaner environments in areas that previously lacked basic infrastructure.

R.K. Puram has been home to large slum clusters where families have struggled without adequate water access, proper sanitation, or safe places for their children to play. The development works aim to close that gap between poor and affluent neighborhoods in practical, visible ways.
