Developer Gets Mac OS X Running on Nintendo Wii
A developer just proved the doubters wrong by successfully running Mac OS X on a Nintendo Wii after a Redditor said it was impossible. Bryan Keller spent years learning new skills and writing custom code to make the seemingly impossible project work.
When someone on Reddit declared there was "zero percent chance" of running Mac OS X on a Nintendo Wii, developer Bryan Keller took it personally.
Five years later, Keller has successfully installed Mac OS X 10.0 Cheetah onto Nintendo's 2006 game console. The project started as a college daydream in 2013, but that dismissive Reddit comment lit a fire that wouldn't go out.
Keller found encouragement in an unlikely place: another hacker's success getting Windows NT running on the Wii. Even without much low-level programming experience, Keller saw it as a chance to learn something new while chasing an audacious goal.
The technical challenges were massive. Keller had to write a custom boot loader from scratch, patch the operating system's kernel, and create entirely new drivers. They even managed to get the Wii's USB ports working so a keyboard and mouse could control the ancient Mac operating system.
Fortunately, the Wii proved to be remarkably hackable. Other developers had already ported Windows 95, Linux, and NetBSD onto the console. The Wii's PowerPC chip shares DNA with processors found in older Macs, which gave Keller confidence the hardware could handle it.

Keller didn't let anything stop the work. Photos from the project show them coding on a laptop during a flight, determined to push through every obstacle.
Why This Inspires
This story isn't really about making a game console run outdated software. It's about what happens when someone tells you something can't be done.
Keller turned anonymous doubt into determination. Instead of accepting limitations, they spent years teaching themselves new skills and solving problems that seemed impossible. The result went far beyond proving a stranger wrong on the internet.
"I learned and accomplished far more than I ever expected," Keller wrote. "The projects that seem just out of reach are exactly the ones worth pursuing."
The developer has shared detailed instructions on GitHub for anyone brave enough to try it themselves. The technical blog post walks through every step of the journey, offering a roadmap for other dreamers who hear "it can't be done."
Sometimes the best motivation comes from someone saying you'll fail.
