Dog Crashes Olympic Race, Steals Hearts at Finish Line

Sometimes the best Olympic moments aren't about who wins gold, but who brings the most joy to the stadium.

During a women's team sprint cross-country race at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, a furry competitor stole the show. Nazgul, a two-year-old Czechoslovakian wolfdog, escaped from his nearby home and made a beeline for the action in Tesero, northern Italy.

The adventurous pup wandered onto the stadium course during qualifying rounds, spotted skiers heading down the final stretch, and decided he belonged in the race. After sniffing around briefly, Nazgul sprinted across the finish line ahead of several athletes, earning wild cheers from delighted spectators.

Gold medalist Jonna Sundling of Sweden loved the surprise addition. "It was so fun. I like dogs, we have a dog at home," she said after winning with teammate Maja Dahlqvist. The enthusiastic canine even tried following the athletes into the mixed zone where competitors talk to reporters.

Not everyone was thrilled about the four-legged intruder. Swiss skier Nadja Kälin admitted she was relieved to have already finished her run. "I was just happy I wasn't skiing next to the dog because I'm a bit afraid of dogs," said Kälin, who went on to win silver with teammate Nadine Fähndrich.

Officials eventually caught the tail-wagging gatecrashers, but not before race photographers captured him crossing the finish line. The image quickly spread across social media, turning Nazgul into an instant Olympic celebrity.

Nazgul's owner told reporters the "stubborn but very sweet" wolfdog lives at a bed and breakfast near the Olympic course. He had been crying more than usual that morning as he watched his family leave. The pup apparently decided he wasn't going to miss out on the excitement happening so close to home.

The unexpected moment brought laughter and lightness to the intense competition. While Nazgul didn't qualify for any medals, he reminded everyone watching that sometimes the most memorable Olympic moments are the ones nobody planned.
