Rookie Kimi Antonelli Wins Italian GP From 19th Place

Kimi Antonelli carved through the field like magic at the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday, turning a 19th place starting position into his seventh win of the season in what experts are calling one of the greatest drives in Formula 1 history.

The 18-year-old Mercedes driver started near the back of the pack at Monza due to an engine penalty. Most people thought fifth or sixth place would be a solid result for the rookie.

His team boss Toto Wolff had other ideas. "I thought one of the two is going to win," Wolff said before the race, referring to Antonelli and his teammate George Russell. "Either George, because he was on the front row, or Kimi because he's going to walk over water here at Monza."

Antonelli made Wolff look like a prophet. By the end of lap two, he had climbed from 19th to 12th place. After a brief race stoppage, he continued slicing through the field with moves that left veteran drivers shaking their heads in admiration.

"As soon as I saw Kimi up to P5 after a handful of laps, I knew he was going to be in the fight with us," said Russell, who led much of the race before his younger teammate caught him. Within 13 laps of the restart, Antonelli was running third and closing fast on the leaders.

The turning point came during a pit stop strategy split. Mercedes brought Antonelli in for fresh tires while Russell stayed out on older rubber. The computer models said Russell's one-stop strategy would win.

Antonelli had different plans. He rejoined the race 14 seconds behind Russell with just 24 laps remaining. What happened next was racing poetry.

The young Italian caught his teammate with five laps to go, making the impossible look routine. Even a brief off-track excursion couldn't stop his charge. He regained his composure and swept past Russell to take the lead with three laps remaining.

As Antonelli crossed the finish line, Italian fans erupted in celebration. Their countryman had just become the first Italian to win at Monza in 60 years. "It's one that I will remember forever," Antonelli said after the race. "The fans gave that little bit extra to push more."

Wolff explained what made the performance special. "The differentiator today was the ability to go through the traffic. When a driver and a car are one, then there's nothing that can stop them."
