Dutch Tennis Player Saves Match Point, Wins in 5 Hours

Down two sets and staring at match point against him, Dutch tennis player Botic van de Zandschulp refused to give up at the US Open. The 30-year-old saved that match point in the third set tiebreaker and then fought back to win in an epic five-hour, 13-minute battle that became the fourth-longest match in US Open history.

Van de Zandschulp defeated French lucky loser Arthur Gea 3-6, 6-7(0), 7-6(7), 7-6(3), 6-4 to advance to his second career grand slam quarterfinal. Gea, who only got into the tournament when 2022 runner-up Casper Ruud withdrew with a back injury, was attempting to become the first lucky loser ever to reach a men's singles grand slam quarterfinal.

The comeback was especially sweet for van de Zandschulp, who previously upset Australian Alex de Minaur in the second round. After saving match point and clawing back from the brink, he credited the win as even better than his first US Open quarterfinal appearance in 2021.

"It hasn't sunk in yet, but I think tomorrow it's going to be a great feeling," van de Zandschulp said after the match. He'll face top seed Alexander Zverev, who cruised through his round of 16 match against Italy's Luciano Darderi in straight sets.
