Egypt and EU Invest $800M in Clean Energy Grid

Egypt just secured a massive partnership that will power millions of homes with renewable energy and position the nation as a regional clean energy leader.

The European Union and Egypt announced an $800 million financing package to upgrade and expand Egypt's electricity network. The deal combines a $650 million loan from the European Investment Bank with nearly $100 million in grants from the European Commission.

The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company will use these funds to integrate 22 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity into the national grid by 2030. That's enough clean power to supply roughly 10 million households with electricity.

The investment marks one of the first major projects under the Trans-Mediterranean Renewable Energy and Clean-Tech Cooperation Initiative. This program connects the European Union with southern Mediterranean countries to accelerate the shift to sustainable energy.

Egypt's Foreign Affairs Minister Badr Abdelatty called the agreement a reflection of shared determination to advance the green transition. He emphasized that this practical cooperation will modernize infrastructure, strengthen energy security, and create opportunities for sustainable economic growth.
