Egypt Installs Underground Bins to Clean Up City Streets

Streets once lined with overflowing trash bins are getting a high-tech upgrade in Giza, Egypt, where underground garbage containers are making waste virtually disappear.

The city has installed six underground bins in the Dokki district as part of a nationwide push to modernize how Egypt handles trash. Each unit holds about one ton of waste and sits below street level, keeping garbage completely out of sight.

Governor Ahmed Al-Ansari says the pilot program is working so well that crews are preparing to expand into the Agouza district next. The bins solve multiple problems that have frustrated residents for years.

Traditional street bins attracted stray animals, created unpleasant odors, and sometimes became spots where people illegally dumped extra waste. The underground system eliminates all three issues at once.

City crews empty the bins daily on a strict schedule, which has already improved neighborhood cleanliness in measurable ways. No smells escape from the sealed underground containers, and animals can't get inside to scatter trash across sidewalks.

The Ripple Effect

Residents are excited about the changes and want more. People living in lower-income and densely populated neighborhoods have asked officials to prioritize their areas next, saying structured waste disposal could transform their streets.

Some community members suggested adding security cameras near the bins to catch anyone who tries to use them incorrectly or dump prohibited items. The feedback shows how invested people are in keeping their neighborhoods clean.
