Egypt Launches First Cybersecurity Innovation Lab

Egypt is building its future in cybersecurity, and it starts with giving innovators the tools to turn ideas into real solutions.

Telecom Egypt, the National Telecom Regulatory Authority, and the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport just launched the country's first Cybersecurity Innovation Lab. The facility opened in mid-June 2026 under the WE INNOVATE STAR initiative.

The lab creates a dedicated space where researchers can transform early-stage concepts into working prototypes. Entrepreneurs and students will tackle actual cybersecurity threats facing Egypt and the wider region, moving beyond theory into hands-on problem solving.

Tamer El Mahdi, CEO of Telecom Egypt, said innovation now forms the foundation of sustainable growth and national resilience. He emphasized that supporting innovators and researchers strengthens Egypt's digital economy and advances the country's role as a regional technology hub.

The partnership brings together three key players with different strengths. Telecom Egypt provides industry expertise and infrastructure, NTRA offers regulatory guidance and policy support, and the Arab Academy connects academic research with practical application.

The Ripple Effect

Egypt's move reflects a broader shift across Africa toward homegrown cybersecurity solutions. As digital economies expand across the continent, nations face increasing threats from cyberattacks targeting everything from banking systems to government services.

Training local talent means countries can develop security solutions tailored to regional challenges rather than relying solely on imported technology. The lab model creates a pipeline where students become researchers, researchers become entrepreneurs, and entrepreneurs build companies that protect critical infrastructure.
