Egypt Startup Makes 550,000 Disease Tests for Rural Africa
An Egyptian company just raised $1.45 million to produce medical tests that don't need refrigeration, solving a massive problem for rural African healthcare. Reme-D has already delivered over half a million tests across three countries in just two years.
Getting tested for tuberculosis or HIV shouldn't depend on whether your clinic has a working refrigerator, but in much of Africa, that's exactly the barrier millions face.
Egyptian healthtech startup Reme-D just secured $1.45 million to change that reality. The Cairo-based company makes molecular diagnostic tests that stay stable in high temperatures, eliminating the need for cold storage that rural clinics often can't provide.
Founded in 2023 by Salma Tammam, Reme-D has moved fast. The company has already developed 30 different diagnostic products and delivered more than 550,000 tests across Egypt, Kenya, and Sudan. These tests detect diseases including tuberculosis, HIV, hepatitis, and HPV.
The funding round was led by Anara Impact Capital, with participation from the Global Innovation Fund, Africa Health Ventures, and others. This follows a $500,000 investment the company received just seven months earlier.
Africa currently imports most of its diagnostic equipment and medical supplies, which means delays, high costs, and vulnerability to supply chain disruptions. When tests need constant refrigeration during shipping and storage, getting them to remote areas becomes nearly impossible.

Reme-D's temperature-resilient tests solve this infrastructure challenge directly. Tests can travel long distances without spoiling, reaching communities that previously had no access to molecular diagnostics.
The company recently equipped a solar-powered mobile laboratory for the World Health Organization's Egypt office to monitor vector-borne diseases. The lab brings advanced testing directly to communities instead of waiting for samples to reach distant facilities.
The Ripple Effect
With the new funding, Reme-D plans to move into a 1,500-square-meter manufacturing facility that will increase production capacity tenfold. That means potentially millions more tests reaching underserved communities across the continent.
The company is also expanding into diagnostics for genetic diseases and cancer, responding to growing demand as African healthcare systems strengthen their screening programs. Early detection saves lives, but only when testing is actually available.
For investors, Reme-D represents a shift toward backing African companies that manufacture locally rather than just distribute imported products. Building regional production capacity means jobs, expertise, and resilience against global supply disruptions.
The impact goes beyond individual test results. Faster, more accessible diagnostics mean diseases get caught earlier, treatment starts sooner, and outbreaks can be tracked more effectively. Public health improves when the tools actually reach the people who need them.
Half a million tests delivered in two years is just the beginning for a company solving one of healthcare's most practical challenges.
