Electrify America Ditches Prepaid Accounts for Easy Pay
One of America's largest EV charging networks just eliminated the annoying prepaid balance system that left occasional users stuck requesting refunds. Starting now, drivers simply pay for what they use and get automatic refunds for the rest.
Charging your electric vehicle just got a whole lot simpler, thanks to Electrify America finally ditching its frustrating prepaid account system.
The charging network, which operates over 1,100 stations across the United States, is phasing out the app-based account balances that forced customers to preload funds before charging. Instead, drivers will now pay directly for each session, just like filling up at a gas station.
Here's how the old system created headaches. Customers had to add money to their account before charging, and the app would automatically reload a preset amount when the balance ran low. That meant occasional users often ended up with leftover money sitting in their accounts, requiring manual refund requests to get their own cash back.
The new system places a temporary $20 hold on your payment card when you start charging. When your session ends, you automatically get back whatever you didn't use. Charge $17 worth of electricity? The remaining $3 returns to your card without any extra steps.
For the 5,800 charging ports in Electrify America's network, this change removes one more barrier keeping people from switching to electric vehicles. The simpler payment process mirrors how Tesla's Supercharger network already works, setting a new standard for user-friendly charging experiences.

Current users with money still in their accounts don't need to worry. Those existing balances will automatically apply to their next charging session, with any remaining amount billed to their registered card.
The Ripple Effect
This seemingly small change ripples outward in meaningful ways. As America builds out its electric vehicle infrastructure, every friction point removed makes the transition to cleaner transportation easier for more people.
With Tesla's massive Supercharger network offering nearly 38,000 ports at 3,100 stations, competition is pushing other charging companies to improve their customer experience. That competition benefits everyone, from daily EV commuters to road-tripping families trying electric for the first time.
The vast majority of Electrify America locations feature DC fast chargers capable of delivering 350 kilowatts, meaning quick stops for most modern electric vehicles. Removing payment hassles means drivers can focus on their journey instead of managing app balances and refund requests.
Sometimes progress looks like massive technological breakthroughs, and sometimes it looks like fixing the annoying stuff that should have been simple all along.
