Ethiopia and Italy Partner on Nuclear Energy Research

Ethiopia is taking a major step toward energy independence by partnering with Italy on nuclear research and development for peaceful purposes.

Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission Commissioner Sandokan Debebe met with Italy's ambassador to Ethiopia, Sem Fabrizi, in Addis Ababa on March 12 to discuss how the two nations could collaborate on nuclear technology. The conversations centered on research, training programs, and building the infrastructure needed to support nuclear energy development.

Ethiopia currently relies heavily on hydropower for electricity, but climate variability has made water levels unpredictable. As the country pursues industrial growth, officials are looking for reliable baseload power sources that can keep energy-intensive industries running regardless of weather patterns.

Nuclear power could provide that consistency. The technology offers a stable electricity supply that doesn't depend on rainfall or sunshine, making it an attractive option for supporting Ethiopia's industrialization goals.

Italy brings valuable experience to the table despite phasing out its own domestic nuclear power generation decades ago. The country has maintained strong industrial and scientific capabilities in nuclear research and is even exploring ways to reintegrate nuclear technologies into its future energy plans.

The partnership will focus on several key areas. Ethiopian institutions could work with Italian research centers on technical support for nuclear infrastructure, helping Ethiopia build the facilities and systems needed for safe nuclear development. Training programs would develop local expertise, ensuring Ethiopians can manage and maintain nuclear technologies themselves.

The two countries also discussed collaboration on radioactive waste management, a critical component of responsible nuclear energy use. Financing could come through the Mattei Plan for Africa and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, which already support energy projects across the continent.
