Ethiopia Launches Modern Warehouses to Save Farmers' Harvests

Ethiopian farmers are about to get a powerful new tool in the fight against crop waste: high-tech warehouses that keep their hard-earned harvests fresh and safe.

The Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture partnered with Italy's Metalmont to launch the first phase of a major infrastructure project aimed at stopping post-harvest losses. These losses have been quietly draining farmers' incomes and threatening food security across the country.

State Minister Desalegn Teshale explained that reducing waste after harvest sits at the heart of Ethiopia's plan to strengthen farming and achieve food sovereignty. The timing matters because nearly one-third of all food produced worldwide never makes it to a plate.

The new warehouses will rise in high-production zones across the Oromia and Amhara regions. Each facility comes equipped with grain sorting technology, modern drying systems, and internal temperature controls that preserve quality from harvest to market.

But the project goes beyond just buildings. Local agricultural experts will receive specialized training through professional knowledge exchange programs, ensuring communities can maintain and operate the systems long term.

The initiative directly supports Ethiopia's ambitious summer irrigated wheat program by protecting high-yield harvests that might otherwise spoil. Dr. Michele Morana from Italian Development Cooperation noted this addresses a global challenge while meeting Ethiopia's specific needs.

The Ripple Effect

This partnership creates waves beyond preserved grain. Metalmont signed an agreement with the Beaeka Group to explore local assembly and production of storage systems right in Addis Ababa, bringing manufacturing jobs and technical skills to the capital.

The February groundwork included targeted deals with the Amhara Seed Enterprise and regional government to modernize existing storage facilities. That means immediate upgrades for communities already working to feed their neighbors.

When farmers lose less, they earn more, families eat better, and local economies grow stronger.
