
Ethiopian Farmers Boost Wheat Yields 89% With New Methods
Smallholder farmers in Ethiopia are tripling their maize harvests and nearly doubling wheat yields using climate-smart techniques backed by Japan and the African Development Bank. The project has reached over 91,000 farmers with soil restoration practices that fight climate change while growing more food.

Smallholder farmers testing new agricultural methods have increased wheat yields by 89% and maize yields by an incredible 272%. The project combines improved crop varieties, soil restoration techniques like vermicomposting and biochar fertilizers, and digital tools that help farmers make smarter decisions about when to plant and water.
The initiative is backed by a partnership between the African Development Bank Group and Japan through a trust fund that has provided over $50 million since 1994. Local organization Sasakawa Africa Association is implementing the work on the ground, training farmers and testing what actually works in real fields.
On demonstration plots in Seka Chekorsa Woreda, wheat production jumped from 1,293 to 2,444 kilograms per hectare. Maize yields soared even higher, climbing from 1,222 to 4,542 kilograms per hectare.
The farmers are using reduced tillage to protect soil, liming to fix acidity problems, and natural fertilizers instead of chemicals. A digital system called e-kakashi collects field data and analyzes it with artificial intelligence, giving farmers personalized advice for their specific plots.

The project addresses real challenges these communities face: exhausted soils, droughts, floods, and pests that threaten harvests. Rather than just talking about solutions, researchers are measuring everything from soil carbon to greenhouse gas emissions to understand exactly what works.
"This project is helping us move from assumptions to evidence," said Innocent Musabyimana, who manages the project for the African Development Bank Group. "By measuring what happens in the field, we can better understand which practices are most effective and what farmers need to adopt them at scale."
So far, more than 91,000 farmers have participated in Ethiopia, including nearly 30,000 women. The work also extends to Nigeria, Benin, and Ghana.
The Ripple Effect
The success in Jimma shows a path forward for African agriculture that doesn't require choosing between feeding people and protecting the environment. The techniques being tested capture carbon in soil, reduce emissions, and use water and fertilizer more efficiently while dramatically increasing how much food each plot produces.
When a June delegation visited the sites, they toured maize plots, watched emissions measurements, and visited facilities producing vermicompost and biochar. At the Shashemene Farmer Training Center, they saw how digital extension tools are helping spread knowledge faster than traditional methods.
Tomoki Nakai, who represents Japan at the African Development Bank, noted the project's value extends beyond immediate results. The lessons learned about farmer-led approaches could strengthen food security across the continent.
The evidence gathering matters because it shows other farmers, governments, and funders exactly what investments pay off in real growing conditions, not just in theories or laboratory settings.
