But a community-led approach is turning those scars into symbols of hope. Through the SMILE project, a partnership between Hawassa University, the International Water Management Institute, and the University of Aberdeen, local residents are restoring their landscape using simple, affordable solutions.
Instead of expensive technology, communities are building sandbag check dams, creating terraces, planting native grasses, and restoring trees with materials they have on hand. Farmers themselves identified which areas needed help most and designed the interventions that would work best for their land.
The results are already visible. Vegetation is returning to previously bare hillsides, and conservation structures are slowing floodwaters that once carried away fertile soil. Farmers are not only protecting what remains but actively improving agricultural productivity on land they feared was lost forever.

Around 800 farmers are working together to restore approximately 12 kilometers of degraded land using bamboo, fodder plants, and fruit trees alongside native grasses. Demonstration sites allow neighbors to learn techniques and replicate them across the region, spreading knowledge organically through the community.
The project extends beyond environmental restoration into economic opportunity. 120 young people and women have received training to establish businesses like beekeeping and goat-fattening that complement sustainable land management. These enterprises create income while supporting the restoration work.
Local agricultural officials, development workers, and nursery staff have gained new skills through targeted training programs. This capacity building ensures the restoration efforts will continue long after the project period ends, embedding the knowledge into community institutions.
The Ripple Effect
What started as an effort to stop erosion is now reshaping entire communities. Families who considered leaving are staying and investing in their farms again. Children can safely walk to school without navigating dangerous gullies. The restored land provides both immediate food security and long-term climate resilience.
Challenges remain, including water shortages and the sheer scale of degraded areas still needing attention. But local leaders see a clear pathway forward built on community ownership and practical solutions rather than dependence on outside resources.
The transformation proves that environmental recovery doesn't require costly technology when communities have the knowledge, commitment, and support to lead their own restoration. Gullies that once represented decline now showcase what cooperation and determination can achieve for future generations.
