EU and Mediterranean Partners Unlock $2.3T Solar Potential

The EU is joining forces with Mediterranean countries to unlock one of the world's most promising clean energy frontiers, where sunshine and wind could power millions of homes at a fraction of European costs.

Commissioner Dubravka Šuica is bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and financial experts in Brussels to discuss how to scale up private investment in renewable energy across the Mediterranean. The region holds a staggering 2,300 gigawatts of untapped renewable potential, more than double what the EU currently generates.

The math is compelling. Solar and wind energy in the southern Mediterranean costs 30 to 40% less to produce than in Europe. That price advantage, combined with abundant sunshine and wind, makes the region a natural partner for Europe's clean energy transition.

The new Trans-Mediterranean Renewable Energy and Clean-Tech Cooperation Initiative, known as T-MED, will support this partnership. The program aims to remove barriers that have kept private investors on the sidelines, including regulatory hurdles and financial risks that make large energy projects difficult to finance.

The dialogue focuses on three practical goals: cutting through red tape that slows down renewable projects, making investments more attractive through better incentives and transparency, and ensuring every project supports Europe's energy security and competitiveness.

This collaboration tackles challenges both regions share. Rising energy prices, dependence on fossil fuels, vulnerable supply chains, and climate change affect communities on both sides of the Mediterranean.
