
Europe Could Power 63 GW of Solar From Recycled Panels

Europe's aging solar panels are becoming a goldmine for the continent's renewable energy future.
Researchers at SINTEF Industry, one of Europe's largest independent research institutes, discovered that recycling old solar panels could yield between 71 and 126 kilotons of recovered silicon by 2040. That's enough material to manufacture 36 to 63 gigawatts of brand new solar panels without mining a single ounce of new silicon.
The timing couldn't be better. As Europe races to expand its solar manufacturing and reduce dependence on imported materials, these end-of-life panels offer a sustainable solution hiding in plain sight.
Nagarajan Somi Ganesan, the lead researcher, points out that Europe needs to build up its panel manufacturing infrastructure to make this vision reality. New facilities like Spain's planned 20-gigawatt Sunwaf plant and Italy's 3-gigawatt project signal the continent is moving in the right direction.
The recovered silicon isn't quite ready to become new solar panels straight out of recycling. Right now it's pure enough for aluminum alloys and silicones, but Europe will need to invest in upgrading facilities to refine it to solar-grade quality.

The researchers built their projections on realistic assumptions. They expect 85% of old panels to be collected, with half of the younger modules getting a second life through refurbishment before eventually being recycled.
The Ripple Effect
This circular approach solves multiple challenges at once. Europe gets homegrown materials for its clean energy push while keeping thousands of tons of high-tech waste out of landfills.
The breakthrough also demonstrates how the renewable energy industry can become truly sustainable by feeding itself. Today's solar panels become tomorrow's solar panels, creating a closed loop that reduces both environmental impact and supply chain vulnerabilities.
Other European forecasts predicted even more solar waste, but SINTEF's numbers are lower because they account for panels being refurbished and reused. That's good news, showing the industry is already extending product lifespans before recycling becomes necessary.
