Europe Gets First Mass-Produced Semi-Solid Battery EV by 2026

Electric vehicles just took a major leap forward, and it won't break the bank.

MG Motor announced it will bring its groundbreaking semi-solid-state battery technology to Europe by the end of 2026. The company already launched the world's first mass-produced EV with this advanced battery tech in China last December, where the MG4 starts at just $14,500.

This isn't just another incremental improvement. Semi-solid-state batteries represent a significant upgrade over traditional lithium-ion batteries, offering drivers more range, faster charging speeds, and better performance in freezing temperatures.

The technology works by incorporating solid-state electrolytes within each cell, creating a protective layer that extends the battery's lifespan. MG has refined its "SolidCore Battery" to handle different road conditions, climate variations, and regional regulations across Europe.

The numbers tell an impressive story. The Chinese version uses a 53.95 kWh battery delivering 330 miles of range on China's testing scale, though European testing standards will likely show around 248 miles for the MG4 EV Urban model launching in Europe.

Best of all, the new technology won't come with a luxury price tag. MG expects the semi-solid-state battery version to cost roughly the same as the current MG4 Urban, which starts at about $31,300 in the UK market.

The company plans to expand the technology beyond the MG4, with the recently revealed MG 4X electric SUV slated to receive the advanced batteries soon. While other automakers are still testing solid-state batteries in prototypes, MG has already achieved mass production and begun deliveries.

The Ripple Effect

This breakthrough could reshape the entire EV industry. By proving that advanced battery technology can reach consumers at affordable prices, MG is setting a new standard that could pressure competitors to accelerate their own development timelines.

The enhanced safety features and longer battery life address two of consumers' biggest concerns about electric vehicles. Cold-weather performance improvements are particularly significant for European markets where winter conditions have historically reduced EV efficiency.
