Europe's EVs Outsell Gas Cars for First Time Ever

For the first time in automotive history, Europeans bought more electric vehicles than gas cars in a single month, signaling that the clean energy revolution has officially arrived.

In December 2025, battery-electric vehicles claimed a stunning victory across Europe with 308,955 registrations, crushing gas-only cars at 254,449 units. The numbers from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association tell a story of rapid transformation: EVs surged 50% compared to the previous year while gas car sales tumbled nearly 18%.

The momentum didn't appear overnight. Throughout 2025, nearly 2.6 million EVs found new homes across Europe, a leap of nearly 30% from the year before. Meanwhile, traditional gas cars saw sales drop to around 3.5 million, down almost 19%.

EVs now capture 26.3% of the European market, edging past pure gasoline vehicles at 21.7%. Diesel cars have nearly disappeared from the conversation, barely scraping past 70,000 sales in December. Hybrids still lead the pack overall with 380,921 units, but EVs are closing that gap faster than anyone predicted.
