SUNY Oneonta Gets First Solar Farm to Power 205 Homes

SUNY Oneonta is about to get a massive solar upgrade that will transform how the upstate New York campus powers itself.

PowerBank has been awarded a contract to build a 1.6 megawatt ground-mounted solar array at the Oneonta campus. It's the university's first large-scale solar installation built right on campus grounds.

Once complete, the solar farm will produce enough electricity to power the equivalent of 205 homes every year. The power will flow directly to campus buildings, helping the university slash its reliance on traditional energy sources.

The $3.6 million project came through a competitive process run by the New York Power Authority. PowerBank will own and operate the solar array, creating a long-term clean energy partnership with the university.

The project also qualifies for approximately $1.4 million in federal tax credits, which helps make the economics work. That federal support is part of broader incentives designed to accelerate America's shift to renewable energy.

This solar farm isn't just good news for one college campus. It's part of SUNY Oneonta's Clean Energy Master Plan and fits into New York State's ambitious climate goals.
