FDA Approves First Cholesterol Pill to Replace Injections

For people battling dangerously high cholesterol that won't budge with standard medications, a game-changing alternative just arrived without the sting of a needle.

The FDA approved Lipfendra, the world's first oral PCSK9 inhibitor, offering patients the same powerful cholesterol-lowering benefits as injections but in a simple once-daily pill. This matters because many high-risk patients, including those with inherited cholesterol conditions, have been stuck with elevated levels despite taking maximum doses of statins.

The approval comes after clinical trials involving 3,207 adults showed remarkable results. Patients taking the once-daily pill saw their dangerous LDL cholesterol drop by 56 to 59 percent over 24 weeks, matching the effectiveness of injectable treatments that require regular doctor visits or self-administration.

"The new oral therapy lowers LDL by about 50 to 60 percent, making it a promising option for patients who prefer to avoid injections," said Dr. Ambuj Roy, Professor of Cardiology at AIIMS Delhi. The medication specifically helps adults with high cholesterol, including those with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia, an inherited condition that makes cholesterol management extremely difficult.
