Finland Invests $136M in Tanzania's Green Forestry Boom

Finland just showed the world what climate partnership looks like when it actually works.

At Finnish Forest Day 2026 in Dar es Salaam, businesses from both nations gathered to do something rare in international development. They moved past promises and into real commercial partnerships that create jobs, transfer technology, and protect forests at the same time.

The crown jewel might be Wazo Tanzania, now East Africa's first manufacturer of Cross-Laminated Timber. Founder Musa Malick attended the event to connect with Finnish companies who've mastered the advanced timber technologies he's bringing to the region.

Finnish Ambassador Theresa Zitting emphasized what makes this approach different. Strong business partnerships unlock potential that aid money alone cannot. When companies, innovators, and investors build real relationships, they exchange knowledge and identify opportunities that governments simply can't manufacture.

Tanzania's Director of Forestry and Beekeeping, Daniel Pancraas, welcomed the direct business engagement. He called it exactly what's needed to translate shared ambitions into jobs, value addition, and sustainable growth. Finland has been one of Tanzania's most consistent partners in realizing the country's forestry potential.

This model matters beyond Tanzania's borders. Traditional development aid often struggles to create lasting change because it doesn't build the commercial networks that make businesses thrive. Finnish Forest Day created structured matchmaking sessions where Tanzanian entrepreneurs could connect with Finnish companies, access co-financing, and learn from decades of Nordic forestry expertise.

The event launched Tanzania's Forest Sector Investment Guide, giving investors a clear roadmap. Finnfund Deputy CEO Minnamari Marttila noted that structured business engagement moves companies beyond introductions into meaningful relationships involving technology transfer, investment, and long-term cooperation.

UNDP's FUNGUO Programme Manager Joseph Manirakiza highlighted why this matters for innovation. Entrepreneurs need more than financing. They need networks, markets, and partnerships. Events like this give GreenCatalyst enterprises the connections they need to scale their impact.
