
Finland Turns Sand Into Clean Heat for Heavy Industry

Finnish cleantech startup TheStorage just launched the first industrial-scale pilot of a game-changing technology that stores renewable energy in ordinary sand and converts it into high-temperature steam. The system went live in January 2026 at a Finnish brewery, tackling one of the biggest blind spots in global climate action.
Industrial heat accounts for roughly one fifth of the world's total energy use. From food production to chemical processing, factories need constant hot steam to operate, and 80 percent of that heat currently comes from burning oil and gas.
The challenge has always been reliability. Wind and solar produce clean electricity, but only when conditions are right. Factories can't shut down when the wind stops blowing.
TheStorage's solution is elegantly simple. When renewable electricity is abundant and cheap, the system uses it to heat ordinary sand up to 800 degrees Celsius in insulated silos. That scorching sand stores the energy until it's needed, then releases it as steam or thermal oil on demand.

The technology works through two silos and a heat exchanger. Cool sand moves from one silo through an electric heater, then sits in a hot silo where it retains energy with minimal loss. When factories need heat, sand circulates through the heat exchanger to produce steam with ten times better efficiency than conventional storage systems.

After years of factories wanting to go green without viable options, this breakthrough finally makes it possible. "Companies have wanted to decarbonise for years, but viable solutions simply weren't available," says Timo Siukkola, CEO of TheStorage. "Finally, renewable energy generation can meet industrial heat demand in a way that's both ecologically sound and economically practical."
The numbers tell an inspiring story. TheStorage projects the system could slash energy costs by up to 70 percent while cutting carbon emissions by up to 90 percent. For context, that level of industrial decarbonization is essential for meeting EU climate goals of 90 percent emission reductions by 2040 and full carbon neutrality by 2050.
