Florida Ag Teacher Goes From Meat Inspector to Teacher of Year

Kyndall Brown spent years inspecting meat in Louisiana and selling cattle feed, but something was missing. Last Thursday night in Orlando, the Harmony Middle School agriculture teacher discovered just how far that leap of faith took her when she was named Florida's Teacher of the Year.

Brown, who has taught in Osceola County for just four years, beat out four other finalists for the state's top teaching honor. State officials praised her commitment to hands-on learning and her passion for preparing students for real-world success.

The former meat inspector and sales representative had bounced between jobs before finding her calling in education. "I didn't find purpose in what I was doing every single day," Brown said in a February interview. "I felt like I was just running through the motions."

Teaching changed everything. Brown built a rigorous agriculture curriculum from scratch at her school, partnering with local farms so students could get their hands dirty with real farming experience. She even launched a fishing club, giving kids another way to connect with the natural world.

Osceola Superintendent Mark Shanoff called Brown "a difference maker" who represents everything great about teaching. He highlighted her knowledge, enthusiasm, and drive to make learning meaningful for every student who walks through her door.

The Ripple Effect

Brown's journey back home makes her story even more remarkable. She graduated from the same Osceola County school district where she now teaches, bringing her education full circle.

Her path from Mississippi State University with an animal sciences degree to a business master's from LSU Shreveport wasn't direct. But those diverse experiences in the meat industry and agricultural sales gave her real-world knowledge that most teachers can't offer their students.

Now Brown wakes up each day wanting to do something for her animals, her students, her classroom, or her school's agricultural fair. That sense of purpose she craved in her previous careers finally found her.

Her work shows students that agriculture isn't just about farms. It's about science, business, relationships, and building a future in an industry that feeds the world.
