Florida First Responders Raise $70K for Cancer Research

Thousands of people filled Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach on July 22, not for a regular game, but to watch their local heroes face off with baseball bats instead of emergencies.

Volusia County Fire Rescue and the Sheriff's Office played their first-ever charity softball game. The firefighters won on the scoreboard, but the real victory belonged to the community.

The event raised over $70,000 for the V Foundation for Cancer Research and Volusia Sheriff's Youth Foundation. Even Sheriff Mike Chitwood didn't expect that kind of turnout for a first-time event.

"There's no way the first time out of the box you're going to raise that kind of money," Chitwood said. "But you know what? We did."

Local residents packed the stands and opened their wallets. The donations poured in throughout the game, surpassing all expectations.

Fire Chief Joe King and Sheriff Chitwood chatted between innings, showing the camaraderie that makes these community partnerships work. Players from both teams swung for the fences while fans cheered every hit and catch.
