Sea turtle hatchling crawling across sandy beach toward ocean on Florida specialty license plate

Florida's Sea Turtle Plates Raised $10M Since 1998

😊 Feel Good

An adorable sea turtle license plate design has funded Florida's endangered species conservation for over 25 years. The $23 annual fee generates millions for beach monitoring, research, and rehabilitation programs that save lives.

Every time Kathy and Joey Satterfield renew their car registrations, they're funding the rescue of endangered sea turtles swimming just off Florida's coast.

Since 1998, Florida's sea turtle specialty license plate has quietly raised up to $10 million for conservation programs protecting these ancient mariners. More than 100,000 drivers now display the charming design showing a baby turtle crawling toward the ocean.

The plate costs vehicle owners an extra $23 per year, plus a one-time manufacturing fee. For the Satterfields, who own two plates, it's money well spent. "For us it's worth it, and it brings awareness," Kathy told WUSF. "We're one of the largest nesting areas for loggerheads, and that's a big thing."

The money goes directly to protecting turtles. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission receives 70% of proceeds, which funds beach surveys during nesting season, habitat management, and population research for endangered species. Staff members review construction permits near beaches and track changing turtle populations across the state.

The remaining 30% flows through the Sea Turtle Conservancy's grant program. In the 2026-2027 funding cycle alone, the organization awarded over $581,000 to 32 different projects working to save Florida's sea turtles.

The Ripple Effect

Hunter Eichler sees the impact firsthand at Gulf Specimen Marine Laboratory, where she rehabilitates injured and sick turtles. The license plate funding recently purchased a portable X-ray machine for her facility.

Before the new equipment arrived, Eichler had to transport turtles off-site for imaging. Getting them X-rayed once was hard enough. Getting follow-up images was nearly impossible. Now she can monitor their recovery without the stress of repeated transport, leading to better outcomes for her patients.

"It is directly helping endangered animals," Eichler explained. "It is funding organizations and nonprofits to do work that protects these animals."

The program's success inspired similar conservation efforts. Florida now offers $5 decals featuring both manatees and sea turtles, with proceeds supporting research and rescue operations for both species.

This year's sea turtle decal celebrates Florida's record-breaking leatherback nesting season in 2025, when researchers documented 2,012 nests from the endangered giants. The design reminds beachgoers to give nesting turtles at least 50 feet of space.

Anyone can join over 100,000 Floridians already supporting sea turtle conservation through their vehicle registration.
