Four Colorado Seniors Win $500K in Top Scholarships

🦸 Hero Alert

Four high school seniors from a small mountain town just earned some of the most prestigious scholarships in Colorado, totaling over half a million dollars. Their success proves rural students can compete with anyone.

Four seniors at Salida High School in Colorado just won scholarships worth over $500,000 combined, earning some of the state's highest academic honors.

Amelie Keyser and Finnigan Blackburn both received Boettcher Scholarships, given to just 50 top students statewide each year. The award provides $20,000 annually for four years, plus additional college support.

Creede Phillips won the Daniels Scholarship, which awards up to $25,000 per year to student leaders who work to improve their communities. Hawkin Sather earned National Merit Scholar status and a full ride to the University of Alabama.

Keyser will study environmental chemistry at Colorado State University. "The Boettcher Foundation's graciousness to extend such life-changing opportunities to Colorado students is truly remarkable," she said, crediting her family and community for their support through the challenging application process.

Blackburn admitted the scholarship application took longer than expected and proved difficult. "It was all worth it in the end," he said. He plans to study engineering at CU Boulder and work in sustainable energy design.

Phillips also chose CU Boulder for political science and pre-law studies. He gave special thanks to his mom, a journalism graduate who helped polish his essays. "I feel awesome, this really is a blessing," Phillips said.

The Ripple Effect

Salida is a town of fewer than 6,000 people tucked in the Colorado mountains. Having four seniors win top state scholarships in the same year is extraordinary for any school, let alone a small rural district.

The students credited their teachers and administrators by name. Sather thanked the district for "providing excellent education over the last 13 years" and specifically recognized Principal Jesse Hull and Assistant Principal Abigail Cooksey.

Blackburn noted the school district let him earn his associate degree through dual enrollment while still in high school. "They prepared me better than I could have imagined for the opportunities and the challenges that lie ahead," he said.

These four students prove that zip code doesn't determine potential, and small schools can deliver world-class education when teachers, families, and communities rally behind their kids.
