France Hits 33 GW Solar Milestone, Powers 481K Homes

France just proved that the clean energy transition is accelerating, connecting enough new solar panels in early 2026 to power over 100,000 homes.

The country added nearly 1,500 megawatts of solar capacity in the first quarter of 2026, bringing its total solar power to 33 gigawatts. That's enough clean energy to meet nearly 5% of the nation's electricity needs, up from just 4% a year ago.

The real story is happening on rooftops across France. More than 62% of new solar installations now include systems where families and businesses use the power they generate, cutting their electricity bills while helping the planet. That trend grew even during the typically cloudy winter months.

French households and businesses consumed 481 gigawatt hours of their own solar power during the first three months of 2026. That's electricity that never touched the grid, saving money and reducing strain on the power system.

Small rooftop installations under 9 kilowatts made up three quarters of all new connections. These smaller systems are perfect for homes and small businesses taking control of their energy future, one solar panel at a time.

Meanwhile, larger solar farms continue powering France's clean energy goals. Big installations over 500 kilowatts accounted for 30% of new capacity, often built in sunny southern regions where solar power works best.

Three regions lead the charge: Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Occitanie, and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes together host half of France's total solar capacity. These sunny areas added nearly half of all new solar power this quarter, showing that momentum keeps building.

The pipeline looks bright too. Another 36 gigawatts of solar projects are waiting to connect to the grid, with over 8 gigawatts already approved. That means France's solar capacity could double in the coming years.
