Cancer survivors participating in group exercise class at YMCA fitness center

Free Cancer Recovery Program Starts Feb. 12 in Linville

✨ Faith Restored

Williams YMCA in Avery County is offering a free 12-week exercise program designed specifically for cancer survivors, starting February 12. The program combines strength training, cardio, and peer support to help rebuild physical and emotional strength after treatment.

Cancer survivors in Avery County now have a free path to rebuild their strength and confidence after treatment ends.

The Williams YMCA is opening registration for its next Livestrong program, a 12-week exercise and wellness course created specifically for adults who've lived through cancer. The program runs February 12 through May 1, meeting twice weekly from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the YMCA's Linville location.

What makes this different from typical gym programs is the specialized training instructors receive in cancer survivorship and post-treatment exercise. Each session gets tailored to individual health histories, treatment effects, and current fitness levels.

Classes combine strength training, cardiovascular work, flexibility exercises, and balance work in small groups of eight to 12 people. Participants often say the peer support becomes just as valuable as the physical training itself.

Chris Kennedy, the program coordinator, can be reached at chrisk@ymcaavery.org or 828-737-5500 for registration. Participants complete a health intake form and may need medical clearance from their physician before starting.

The Ripple Effect

The program's impact extends far beyond the 12 weeks. Research conducted with Yale University and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute found participants experienced increased physical activity, improved fitness and quality of life, and reduced cancer-related fatigue after completing the course.

Many graduates continue exercising independently or with friends they made during the program. Others join CancerFit, a virtual platform offering live and on-demand classes led by trainers certified in exercise oncology, allowing them to maintain their progress from home.

Regular exercise after cancer treatment has been shown to reduce fatigue, improve strength and cardiovascular health, enhance mood and cognitive function, and support independence in daily activities. Programs like Livestrong help ensure that activity remains safe and appropriate for bodies recovering from treatment.

The isolation many survivors experience makes the group format particularly powerful. Exercising alongside others who understand the journey builds camaraderie and emotional support that individual workouts can't replicate.

Livestrong operates at YMCA locations nationwide, bringing evidence-based survivorship support into community settings where survivors can access trained instructors and peer support close to home.
