Georgia Rescuers Save Hiker as Temps Drop 40 Degrees

A hiker who set out on the Appalachian Trail in sunny 66-degree weather needed rescue just hours later as temperatures plummeted to 26 degrees with snow falling around him.

The hiker began his journey on Sunday at Springer Mountain, the southern starting point of the famous 2,190-mile trail that stretches all the way to Maine. After sustaining an injury and spending an unexpected night on the trail, he found himself unable to safely make it back without help.

Rescue crews from Fannin County Emergency Management Agency responded quickly to the call near the Springer Mountain shelter. The team had to hike through rugged, remote terrain in the Chattahoochee National Forest, navigating steep ground as conditions rapidly deteriorated around them.

By the time rescuers reached the stranded hiker, a light blanket of snow covered the ground and temperatures had dropped a staggering 40 degrees from when he started his trek. Despite the challenging conditions, the team successfully assisted him out of the area and back to safety.
