Georgia Schools Win State Math and Literacy Honors

Students across Lowndes County, Georgia are proving that consistent hard work pays off in ways that earn statewide recognition.

The Georgia Department of Education just awarded achievement banners to five local schools for outstanding student growth and academic performance in math and literacy. State School Superintendent Richard Woods personally presented the honors, which only go to a small number of schools statewide each year.

Three middle schools stood out for their math achievements. Hahira Middle School earned recognition for both 8th grade growth and having 8th graders reach high school level math proficiency. Lowndes Middle School and Pine Grove Middle School both received honors for their 8th graders mastering high school level math concepts.

On the literacy side, two elementary schools showed impressive gains. Moulton-Branch Elementary School demonstrated strong literacy growth among 3rd graders. Westside Elementary School earned double recognition for 3rd grade literacy growth and 5th grade proficiency.

The achievement banners represent more than good test scores. They signal that teachers, school leaders, and students have built something sustainable, a culture where learning thrives year after year.

"These recognitions reflect the daily commitment of our teachers, leaders, and students to high-quality instruction and continuous improvement," said Superintendent Sandra Wilcher. She emphasized that earning a banner means sustained academic progress, not just a one-time success.

When middle schoolers master high school level math before they even leave 8th grade, they enter high school with confidence and advanced skills. When elementary students build strong literacy foundations early, they're set up to succeed across every subject for years to come.

These achievements don't just benefit individual students. They strengthen the entire community by preparing young people with the skills they need for college, careers, and life.

The district remains focused on providing rigorous instruction and strong support systems that help every student grow. Five schools earned banners this year, and their success creates a roadmap others can follow.
