German Firms Ditch Glue to Make Paper Recycling Better

Paper packaging has a sticky problem, and three German companies just solved it without using a drop of glue.

The culprit? Those labels, seals, and adhesives that make paper packaging impossible to recycle. The glue gums up recycling machines, ruins batches of recycled paper, and sends perfectly good cardboard to landfills instead of getting a second life.

Now Fraunhofer, Hermann Ultraschall, and Henkel have each developed ways to seal paper packages without any adhesive at all. Fraunhofer uses lasers to heat and seal paper. Hermann Ultraschall welds it with ultrasonic waves. Henkel created a cold seal method that works even on tricky food packaging.

The timing couldn't be better. New European rules require all packaging to be at least 70% recyclable by 2030, jumping to 80% by 2038. Germany's strict licensing fees mean companies need solutions fast.

"This is an innovation they have never seen before," says Michael Baumann from Hermann Ultraschall, who reports major packaging companies are already in talks to bring the technology to mass production. Fraunhofer hopes to launch their laser sealing within two years.

Italy's Regina brand is already using Henkel's heat seal solution to switch from plastic to paper packaging for toilet paper and kitchen towels. The cold seal version works for chocolate and ice cream too, foods that can't handle heat during packaging.

Paper is already Europe's recycling champion, with nearly three quarters of all paper and cardboard getting recycled in 2024. But these sticky barriers have held back even better numbers for years.

The breakthrough means your cereal box, tissue package, or snack wrapper could soon be 100% recyclable instead of heading to the dump because of a stubborn sticker. Every shopping trip becomes a chance to support truly circular packaging.

There are challenges ahead. Existing packaging machines need updates to work with the new technology. Production runs slower than traditional glue methods for now. And not every type of paper works with these bonding techniques yet.

But the companies are actively working with paper manufacturers to develop materials that seal easily. Fraunhofer's fully automated laser system keeps getting faster. And the packaging industry's biggest players are paying close attention.

Germany's Packaging Valley, a hub for packaging innovation, is betting these glue-free solutions represent the future of sustainable packaging. When regulation pushes and innovation pulls, real change happens fast.

Soon, the paper products filling your recycling bin might actually make it all the way back to being paper again.
