German Solar Carport Turns Parking Lots Into Power Stations

Parking lots could soon become powerhouses for clean energy, thanks to a clever German innovation that puts solar panels where cars already gather.

K2 Systems has rolled out an upgraded version of its solar carport designed specifically for supermarket parking areas and business lots. The system earned France's ETN certification, which confirms every component meets strict safety and performance standards from the supporting structure to waterproofing.

The modular aluminum design fits over existing parking spaces with enough clearance for delivery trucks and commercial vehicles. Each row features a smart cantilever design that adds an extra parking spot at the end, maximizing every inch of available space while generating electricity overhead.

What makes this system special is how it protects both installers and the investment itself. Workers no longer need to climb on top of the structure because the solar panels mount from underneath using brackets. Forklifts can lift panels directly into place, cutting down on dangerous rooftop work.

The system handles large solar panels up to 2.38 meters long, positioned vertically to capture maximum sunlight. Between each panel sits an aluminum drainage profile called CarportDrain that collects rainwater and channels it into integrated gutters, keeping shoppers dry as they load groceries.

The Ripple Effect: This design solves multiple problems at once. Businesses get renewable energy without sacrificing parking spaces. Customers enjoy covered parking that stays cooler in summer. French building authorities and insurance providers have already approved the design after rigorous testing by the Scientific and Technical Centre for Building.
