Germany Organ Plays Same Chord for 2 Years, Changes Today

Inside a medieval church in Halberstadt, Germany, thousands gathered today to witness something most concerts would consider a disaster: a single note being added to a chord.

But this isn't just any performance. The John Cage Organ Project has been playing one continuous composition since September 2001, and it won't finish until the year 2640.

The piece is called "ORGAN²/ASLSP," which stands for "As Slow As Possible." Today marks only the 17th chord change in nearly 25 years of continuous music.

Composer John Cage wrote the piece for piano in 1985, then adapted it for organ before his death in 1992. He left instructions to play it "as slowly and softly as possible," and the organizers in Halberstadt took him seriously.

The change today added an A4 pipe to the existing seven notes, creating an eight-note chord. The last change happened two years ago in February 2024, and the next won't occur until October 2027.

So how does an organ play the same notes for years? An electric blower sends continuous wind through the pipes, while small sandbags hold down the keys. The chord changes themselves are done manually, turning each shift into a celebrated event.
