Ghana Engineers Tackle Road Quality Crisis Head-On

Now the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) is stepping up with a solution. President Ing. Ludwig Annang Hesse will deliver a major address on February 19, 2026, outlining practical strategies to transform how Ghana builds and maintains its roads.

The problem is urgent. Premature road failures, poor maintenance, and safety concerns have eroded public confidence for years. But GhIE sees a path forward through professional accountability and engineering excellence.

"Our roads are more than concrete and asphalt; they are lifelines connecting people, businesses, and communities," Hesse said ahead of the event. When roads work, economies thrive, families stay connected, and opportunities multiply.

The address, themed "Do It Well, Do It Right," represents a turning point in how Ghana approaches infrastructure. Instead of accepting costly failures as inevitable, the engineering community is demanding higher standards at every stage: from initial design and material selection to construction oversight and long-term maintenance.

The February gathering will bring together engineers, policymakers, contractors, development partners, and media at the Ghana Shippers Authority Auditorium in Accra. Together, they'll tackle how to improve quality, enhance safety, and strengthen project delivery systems.

Hesse emphasized that change requires breaking old patterns. "If we continue doing things the same way, we will continue to see the same costly outcomes," he noted. "It is time to engineer differently and to do it right."

The institution's approach goes beyond criticism to offer technical oversight, innovation, and independent guidance. Their goal: securing Ghana's road network for future generations through ethical engineering practice and professional rigor.
