Ghana's Volta Region Gets Major Eco-Tourism Investment Plan

Ghana just announced an ambitious plan to turn the Volta Region into one of West Africa's premier eco-tourism destinations, bringing jobs and opportunity to local communities.

Tourism Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie made the Volta Region her first official visit after taking office, signaling how seriously the government takes this opportunity. She met with local leaders across every district to identify unique attractions worth developing for visitors.

The region has stunning natural assets waiting to be showcased. Wli and Agumatsa Waterfalls draw nature lovers, while the Adaklu Mountain range offers potential for adventure activities like paragliding. The southern coastal belt features pristine beaches that officials say could rival destinations like Seychelles with proper investment.

Getting there is about to get easier. Following President Mahama's directive, the tourism and highways ministries are working together to repair roads leading to major attractions. The improvements are part of Ghana's "Big Push" infrastructure program, with phase two expected to dramatically improve access to tourism sites.

The Ripple Effect

This isn't just about attracting tourists. The plan creates a framework where local communities directly benefit from development. District assemblies identify what makes their areas special, while the ministry provides expertise to package and market those attractions globally.

Private investors are being invited to partner with the government through arrangements where they build and operate facilities on government land. The ministry has already secured litigation-free properties ready for tourism development.

A new digital platform launched by the Ghana Tourism Development Company now showcases hotels, restaurants, and attractions across the country. The minister urged local businesses to register so the government can promote them to international visitors.

Success stories are already emerging. The Vodza Easter Regatta, organized with local eco-tourism groups, gained national attention when Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang participated this Easter. It shows how cultural events can become tourism magnets when done right.

The government is working with traditional authorities who own some attractions to ensure investments create shared economic benefits. Officials are also courting international investors, including from China, to develop the Marine Drive Project and other initiatives.

By 2027, Ghana expects to see significant tourism growth across the Volta Region through these combined efforts in infrastructure, marketing, and public-private partnerships.
