Giant Muscular Cockroach Statue Revives Japanese Village

A buff, six-limbed cockroach deity is saving a small Japanese town, and it's exactly as weird and wonderful as it sounds.

Kamikitayama is a quiet mountain village tucked away in Japan's Yoshino District, the kind of place tourists rarely visit. But over the past year, curious travelers from China, Europe, and across Japan have been making the two-hour journey from Nara City to meet "Gokiburiten," a five-foot-tall bronze cockroach statue with muscles that would make bodybuilders jealous.

The statue's origin story is just as unusual as its appearance. In 2000, Osaka-based pest control company founder Ryozaburo Minamisono wanted to create a memorial honoring the spirits of pests his company had exterminated. He also hoped to draw attention to his childhood village and the Rinsenji Temple, where his friend served as head priest.

Sculptor Hiroo Amano took the project in an unexpected direction. Drawing inspiration from traditional Kabuki theater poses and sumo wrestling ceremonies, he created a powerful insect deity with four massive humanoid arms thrust dramatically outward. Inside the cockroach's abdomen, Amano embedded a tiny human city, flipping the script on who the real parasites are.

For over two decades, "Gokiburiten" sat quietly outside the temple grounds as a local curiosity. Then social media discovered him, and everything changed.

The Ripple Effect

The statue's viral fame has breathed new life into Kamikitayama. Young people and international visitors now stream into the village, cameras ready, eager to meet what some call the world's "buffest bug." These aren't just quick photo stops either.

Miho Kojima, wife of the temple's former head priest, told Japanese media that the statue has become a conversation starter between her quiet community and the outside world. "This statue is a source of strength for me," she shared, watching strangers become friends over their shared appreciation for the absurd monument.

The village joins other creative Japanese communities that have turned unusual attractions into tourism draws. While nearby Nara City boasts ancient temples and bowing deer, Kamikitayama now offers something entirely different: a chance to reflect on humanity's relationship with nature through the lens of a seriously jacked cockroach.

What started as one man's quirky tribute to fallen pests has become an unlikely symbol of connection, proving that sometimes the strangest ideas bring people together in the best ways.
