Golfer Nico Echavarria Wins $1.7M, Finally Gets Dog

Nico Echavarria just turned a three-shot deficit into a $1.7 million payday and one very excited future puppy parent. The Colombian golfer sealed his third PGA Tour victory Sunday at the Cognizant Classic, which means his wife Claudia is finally getting the dog she's been promised.

"The promise is we're getting a dog because a dog is expensive, so we need a third win for a dog," Echavarria told reporters with a huge smile. The couple has already picked out the breed: a Bernedoodle.

The 31-year-old's comeback victory was anything but easy. He entered the final three holes trailing by three strokes, but a clutch birdie on the 17th hole helped him finish at 17-under par for the tournament.

Meanwhile, Ireland's Shane Lowry stumbled with two painful double bogeys on holes 16 and 17. That opened the door for Echavarria to secure a two-stroke victory over Lowry and American Taylor Moore.

Echavarria played bogey-free golf in the final two rounds at the Palm Beach tournament. His Sunday round of 5-under 66 showcased smart course management even when his drives weren't perfect.

"I didn't have my best off the tee, but I was able to manage," he said. "To win out here, sometimes you have to have good breaks if you're not Scottie Scheffler that hits it every time in the perfect place."

The victory marks a whirlwind month for Echavarria. He closed on a new home in South Florida just days before the tournament started, so now he'll have plenty of space for that Bernedoodle.

The win also earned him his second invitation to the Masters. His previous PGA Tour victories came at the 2023 Puerto Rico Open and 2024 Zozo Championship, but this one comes with the sweetest bonus.

There's something wonderfully human about a professional athlete making his life decisions contingent on tournament wins. While most of us budget for pets with spreadsheets and savings accounts, Echavarria and Claudia (who married last November in Punta Cana) turned it into a shared goal worth chasing.

Now the couple gets to celebrate a tournament victory, a new Florida home, and soon, the pitter-patter of Bernedoodle paws. Sometimes the best prizes aren't trophies at all.
