Google AI Turns Smartphone Camera Into Body Fat Scanner

Google Research just unveiled PhotoScan, an AI system that analyzes body composition using only photos from your phone's camera. The technology can measure body fat percentage and even predict insulin resistance with accuracy matching expensive medical scanners.

The breakthrough comes at a crucial time. More than 73% of American adults are overweight or obese, according to the National Institute of Health. Most people can't afford regular medical scans to track their health, and even fitness trackers only provide limited data.

Here's how it works. Google scientists trained the AI using thousands of X-ray and MRI scans from real patients. They combined this medical data with ordinary smartphone photos to teach the system what different body compositions look like from the outside.

The results surprised even the researchers. PhotoScan proved more accurate than bioelectrical impedance analysis, the technology used in most smartwatches and fitness scales. It can also measure sophisticated metrics like core-to-leg fat ratios and organ-to-skin fat ratios that normally require hospital equipment.

Research scientists Cassie Zhou and Ahmed Metwally demonstrated that PhotoScan could predict insulin resistance, a key indicator of diabetes risk. The system matched the accuracy of DXA scans, the gold standard medical test that costs hundreds of dollars and requires specialized equipment.

The technology builds on health features Google already released for the Pixel Watch 5, including the Insulin Resistance Trend metric. Combining smartphone photos with wearable data could give people unprecedented insights into their metabolic health.
