Google Launches $30M Fund for AI Climate and Health Research

Google just opened applications for $30 million in grants designed to turbocharge scientific discovery using artificial intelligence. Organizations working on health breakthroughs or climate solutions can now apply for funding between $500,000 and $3 million.

The Google.org Impact Challenge: AI for Science is looking for research teams ready to use AI as more than just a helpful tool. They want projects where artificial intelligence sits at the heart of the work, from decoding how diseases spread to predicting climate patterns that could save lives.

Think of it like giving scientists a time machine. Research that might take decades using traditional methods could happen in years or even months with the right AI models. A team modeling disease mechanisms might predict outbreaks before they happen. Climate researchers could build systems that help communities prepare for disasters weeks in advance.

The program covers two main areas. Winners get more than money. Selected teams join a six month accelerator program where Google engineers and AI experts work directly with them. They also receive Google Cloud credits and technical support to help scale their solutions faster.

There's an important catch that makes this initiative special. All AI outputs must be shared under open source licensing or made available for future research. Google wants these breakthroughs to spread quickly, not get locked behind paywalls or patents.

Nonprofits, social enterprises, academic institutions, and research organizations can apply. Applications close in April 2026, giving teams plenty of time to develop strong proposals that demonstrate both scientific ambition and measurable impact.
