Grandfather Saves Two Toddlers on Florida Highway

John Brittingham was driving home on Florida State Road A1A when he saw something that made his heart stop: two toddlers walking alone in the middle of traffic.

The grandfather didn't hesitate. In video footage captured by a drone, Brittingham can be seen sprinting into the highway as cars speed past the young girls.

He waves frantically at oncoming drivers while running toward the children. First, he scoops up one toddler, then rushes to grab the second, who lifts her arms up to him, ready to be rescued.

From danger to safety in six seconds flat. Brittingham carries both girls to the nearby sidewalk, out of harm's way.

"I was terrified thinking of what could have happened to them," Brittingham told WESH after the rescue. The adrenaline surge kept him moving, but the reality of the close call shook him deeply.

Instead of immediately calling police, Brittingham decided to find the children's parents himself. He knocked on a nearby Airbnb rental, and when no one answered, he walked around back.

There he found an open gate, the likely escape route for the adventurous toddlers. The adults inside had no idea the children had wandered off.

"There was an elderly couple and a young girl, and they immediately went into like, 'Oh my God, we're so sorry,'" Brittingham recounted. He reminded them about the open gate and expressed relief that he'd found the girls in time.

As a father of five and grandfather of one, Brittingham knows how quickly children can slip away from watchful eyes. His instinct to protect kicked in instantly, turning a regular drive home into a life-saving moment.

The family, visiting from out of state, cooperated fully with authorities. The Brevard County Sheriff's Office investigated and found no signs of criminal activity, though Georgia's Division of Family and Children Services was contacted as a precaution.

Brittingham hopes his experience serves as a powerful reminder: gates need locks, doors need latches, and children need constant supervision, especially near busy roads.

Sometimes being in the right place at the right time, with the courage to act, makes all the difference.
