Greece Launches First Digital Age Check for Alcohol, Tobacco

Greece just became the first country in Europe to use digital wallet technology to verify buyers' ages at stores selling tobacco and alcohol, making it nearly impossible for shops to sell to minors by claiming they didn't know.

The system launched this month as part of a government effort to enforce a law passed last summer banning sales of both products to people under 18. Health Minister Adonis Georgiades says the new tool removes the most common excuse sellers used when caught breaking the rules.

The digital verification mirrors the same technology the European Union adopted for age checks on social media and internet platforms. Greece adapted it to work in physical stores through the country's existing digital wallet infrastructure, creating the first real-world rollout on the continent.

Since the law took effect in July 2025, authorities have already conducted 82,000 compliance checks. That's more than half the 133,000 checks carried out during the entire previous year, showing the government's serious commitment to enforcement.

Police have made 313 arrests under the new system, with two-thirds related to alcohol violations. Another 150 administrative fines were issued, and authorities filed 121 reports for private events involving minors that weren't properly reported as now required by law.

The Ripple Effect

The system does more than just catch rule-breakers. It creates accountability at the point of sale, making it crystal clear whether someone is old enough to buy restricted products.

Other European countries are watching closely as Greece demonstrates how digital wallet technology can protect young people in everyday transactions. The approach could become a model for enforcing age restrictions on everything from vaping products to gambling.

The technology also frees up sellers from having to guess ages or deal with fake IDs. A quick digital check gives them certainty and protects them from accidentally breaking the law.

For parents, the system offers peace of mind that stores have fewer ways to sidestep rules designed to keep harmful products away from teenagers. The dramatic increase in enforcement checks shows authorities are backing up the technology with action.
