Hong Kong's First Astronaut Joins China's Year-Long Mission

A computer scientist from Hong Kong just made history by becoming the first person from her city to journey into space.

Lai Ka-ying blasted off Sunday night aboard China's Shenzhou 23 spacecraft from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China. She's joined by commander Zhu Yangzhu and astronaut Zhang Zhiyuan on their trip to the Tiangong space station, which translates to "Heavenly Palace."

The mission carries extra significance because one of the three crew members will remain aboard the station for a full year. That extended stay will test human limits in space, exploring how our bodies and minds adapt to long-duration spaceflight.
