Horse Troy Rescued After 13 Hours Trapped in Illinois Flood

When Ashley Beaulieu found her horse Troy trapped in Coon Creek on April 4, he had been fighting against powerful flood currents for hours after being swept over a fence.

The floodwaters in Marengo, Illinois had reached 15 to 16 feet, making rescue nearly impossible. A 10-foot-deep ditch blocked access from the north side, leaving emergency crews scrambling for solutions.

Marengo Fire Chief John Kimmel and his team refused to give up. They used a boat belonging to one of their own firefighters to navigate the dangerous floodwaters and reach Troy.

For 13 hours, the rescue team worked tirelessly while Beaulieu watched, feeling helpless but hopeful. The exhausted horse was finally freed and brought home safely that same day.

"You want to help anything or anybody that's suffering," Beaulieu said. "When it's an animal, it's just that I feel for them because they can't speak and they can't tell us what they're feeling."
