Hubble Reveals Galaxy on 200-Million-Year Journey

Scientists just captured a galaxy in the middle of an incredible journey that will take hundreds of millions of years to complete.

The Hubble Space Telescope photographed Messier 88, a spiral galaxy located 63 million light years away in the constellation Coma Berenices. This active galaxy features a supermassive black hole at its center that's 100 million times more massive than our Sun, surrounded by old reddish stars that give it a warmly glowing heart.

But what makes M88 truly special is where it's headed. The galaxy is traveling toward the center of the Virgo Cluster, a neighborhood of more than a thousand galaxies held together by gravity.

In 200 to 300 million years, M88 will make its closest approach to Messier 87, the massive elliptical galaxy anchoring the entire cluster. The journey covers about two million light years from where the galaxy sits today.

Scientists are already seeing how this epic trek is changing M88. As it pushes through gas between galaxies, a process called ram pressure stripping sweeps away the galaxy's own gas like snow before a plow. The galaxy's swirling disk appears compressed on its leading edge, and M88 has considerably less cold gas than expected for a galaxy its size.

This loss of raw fuel for star formation will fundamentally alter M88's ability to create new stars and change the course of its evolution. Astronomers observed M88 as part of a program dedicated to understanding how spiral galaxies evolve in crowded environments.
