Husband Holds Wife Above Water for 28 Minutes in 40-Foot Well

When Shantha Mohanan accidentally tumbled into the 40-foot well at her home in Kodakuthi, India, her husband heard her cries and made a split-second decision that would save her life. Without a second thought, 65-year-old Mohanan descended into the deep well on that Monday afternoon in May.

Once inside, Mohanan clung to the well's interior ring with one hand while holding his 57-year-old wife above the water with the other. For 28 agonizing minutes, he kept her head above the surface, his arms refusing to give in despite the exhaustion.

Neighbors heard the commotion and immediately called the Puthencruz police and the fire station at Pattimattom. The fire and rescue team, led by station officer N.H. Hassainar, raced 12 kilometers to reach the couple's home, arriving in just 13 minutes.

The rescue itself took another 15 minutes of careful work. Fire personnel lowered a ring attached to a net into the well, pulling Shantha to safety first, then her husband.

"Both risked drowning had we delayed in rescuing them," fire officials said after the rescue. The couple had been in the water for nearly half an hour, but Mohanan's quick thinking and physical strength made all the difference.
