ICE Officer Saves 6-Year-Old From Drowning in Florida Pool

When Gregory Simmonds spotted an unconscious child floating in a Florida pool, he didn't think twice before diving in fully clothed to save her life.

Simmonds was at a community pool in Pasco County on Florida's Gulf Coast when he noticed the 6-year-old girl floating motionless in the water. Security footage captured the moment he glanced over, immediately recognized the danger, and leaped into action.

Without hesitation, Simmonds jumped into the pool in his regular clothes and swiftly reached the child. He carried her to the pool's edge and began administering CPR on dry land.

Thanks to his quick response, the child regained consciousness before paramedics arrived. Medical officials confirmed she's expected to make a full recovery.

Simmonds works as an officer with Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Enforcement and Removal Operations office in Tampa. His training kicked in at exactly the right moment when a child's life hung in the balance.

"This officer swiftly sprung to action and delivered life-saving medical care to this 6-year-old who drowned," said Acting Assistant DHS Secretary Lauren Bis.

Pasco County Sheriff's Office Cpl. J. Leathers praised Simmonds' decisive actions. His willingness to jump into a critical situation without hesitation directly contributed to saving the child's life, Leathers noted.

The Ripple Effect

This rescue represents just one of several recent life-saving acts by federal officers during off-duty moments. In March, an agent at JFK International Airport in New York helped save a 1-year-old experiencing a medical emergency when a father's screams for help rang through the terminal.

That same winter, multiple off-duty ICE agents saved another child from drowning in a hotel pool in Plymouth, Minnesota. When a woman approached them seeking help during dinner, they rushed to the pool and performed CPR until emergency services arrived.

These officers' training prepares them for emergencies, but their willingness to act when lives are at stake makes all the difference. In each case, someone went home to their family because a trained professional happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Split-second decisions save lives, and Simmonds proved that heroes don't always wear capes—sometimes they're just paying attention at the pool.
